Oral microbiome disorders in the course of selected cardiovascular diseases

Project manager: M.D. dentist Barbara Brzychczy
Implementation years 2022 – 2023

Assessment of oral microbiota and atherosclerotic plaques in patients of the Vascular Surgery Department with the Endovascular Procedures Subunit of the Krakow Specialist Hospital. The study aims to establish the relationship between the condition of the periodontium and cardiovascular diseases. Available literature data indicate a relationship between periodontal diseases and cardiac diseases. Previous research has been conducted using classic microbiological culture methods. The latest molecular biology technique, next-generation sequencing (NGS), makes it possible to very precisely determine the composition of the microbiome of the tested samples, which allows for the acquisition of new knowledge and the establishment of correlations between the bacteria present in the oral cavity and atherosclerotic plaque.
